Personality;; A well bred young lady, Maria knows all the different ways you can arrange your table settings, and which etiquette is fashionable for which occasion. She can also direct the perfect banquet and knows exactly how to greet her guests so that each feels welcomed, and still have the energy to smile contently and entertain the rest of the guests. She's careful to not let her opinions cloud her judgement -- while being absolutely volatile when someone really pisses her off. She tries to not let her temperamental side show in public, unless she's driving the point home to a seemingly deaf date she really wants to end.

History;; Maria's the daughter of a wealthy, charitable family, that works with motors in the automotive industry. She's an only child, and once had a pet scottie dog named Scotch. Her childhood was uneventful, as she rarely saw her parents do their work, and also because for a good part of her youth, she was in a fancy boarding school where she clashed with the headmistress due to her fascination with less "lady-like" economics. She was fascinated by numbers and excelled in mathematics and geometric figures, while failing in domestic work. It wasn't until she was thirteen, and women's studies opened up for more knowledgeable approaches, did Maria find satisfaction. She returned home for holidays frequently and spent her breaks in her father's research projects, taking apart motors to find their flaws and then putting them back together with added effects to make the engines more efficient than previously. Her father affectionately called his daughter his "little grease monkey", and her mother was pleased with her daughter's interest in the family business.

At school, she learns proper business etiquette and how to present herself splendidly and knowledgeably to her peers. She follows directions to the letter, and though she does continue her hobbies in automotive repair, she also takes interest in societal lunches and the knowhow of charities and banquets. Social care becomes an important part of Maria's education, learning that the bonds she makes then and there can greatly affect the bonds she makes in the future. She makes friends with the more upper-crust ladies and lads of society, mingling during parties and participating in their charitable functions. She starts to wear white, cotton gloves as is the fashion of the time for wealthy ladies, and she peppers her tone with intrigue and interest. Even when she is utterly bored by talk of beach houses and which person had received a brand new car for their birthday, she maintains a polite, congenial manner whilst sipping quality martinis. She even hosts parties of her own, headlining for charities such as vaccine funds in third-world countries, and by age seventeen, she is known to be a wonderful hostess, and a must-have for any invitation list.

However, as she grows in mind, she also grows in body, and soon men take notice of the young woman in the white gloves. They spy her during parties and banquets and bother Maria with offers of drinks and invitations to lunch, to which Maria tries to respectfully decline. However, Maria soon finds that there are men who will not take "no" for an answer, and her fiery temper rears its head. The first man who refuses to leave Maria be, she dispatches him with a martini glass to his head and storms from the party she'd been attending. The second man receives the same treatment, but the third man leaves with the stinging red print of Maria's backhand on his cheek. She refuses to let any man court her, especially not the men who feign interest in what Maria has to say and treat her as if she is a bauble to be put on a shelf. While at first, Maria worries that her public rejections will negatively impact her image, by the tenth rejection, she finds she does not care in the least.

In a way, this earns her respect from many women her age. A well mannered, congenial lady who is not afraid to break decorum in order to make her point is not as common as one would think in Maria's time. Especially one who doesn't worry for the possibility of impending marriage, which for those of the upper-crust, is always economically beneficial in some form or manner. And for a time, this continues, with Maria planning banquets left and right straight out of college and by age twenty, she's already planning every single gala and banquet hosted by her father's company, helping to bring in millions of dollars in charitable donation which are put to causes of worthy use, each one reviewed and signed off by Maria herself. The only major difference is Maria's attendance of dates made with young gentleman wishing to court her. While Maria is content to remain single, her parents worry for their daughter's future. After all, they cannot continue caring for her much longer, and they want a good husband for their daughter who can care for Maria when Mr. and Mrs. Carbonell can no longer.

The men Maria "dates" are half and half -- half good-hearted and not of Maria's interests, or the panty-sniffing cads who are most definitely not of Maria's interests. With the good hearts, she often finds herself leaving dinner early due to incompatibility of interests and considerations. With the cads, Maria usually unloads her drinks and dinner plates on the arrogant fop, and then strides straight out the double doors of the restaurants. Every single man from which she accepts a date turns out to be like the rest -- failures of proportions of imminent disaster ( or at least, that's what Mrs. Carbonell clams). By the time she's twenty-one, she's successfully earned her place as "one of the toughest broads on this there earth!" having turned down sixty-four men, all of whom soon became known by their number sequence in reference with Maria. This does cause hurt pride, and Maria's name begins to be besmirched and soon, Maria's dating list dwindles, much to Maria's relief (the opposite effect the plucked men desired for Maria).

But then comes along Howard Stark. Howard Stark -- handsome, brilliant, rich, and a complete jackass in Maria's view. She isn't impressed by his womanizing habits (though apparently they'd been worse when she had been younger) and his blatant disregard for protocols often leave a bitter taste in the mouth where Maria is concerned. Once upon a time as a child, like most little girls, she'd dreamed of marrying Howard Stark one day, but as she got older, she grew out of that fantasy and came to realize the notaries of Howard Stark that the press didn't cover, especially since he sometimes did business with the Carbonells, and while age mellowed Howard, he was still a lean stag looking for a doe. When Maria was little, she used to hide behind doors and peek around walls to catch a glimpse of the tall, dark, handsome inventor and owner of Stark Industries, and now, she will never admit to such things, even in her circle of friends (the same girls whom she'd befriended in school) and to her parents.

Maria assumes that Howard will not recognize the little girl who'd spied on him so cheekily in her youth, but, surprise surprise, he recognizes the woman she's become, and suddenly, Maria becomes a doe on Howard the stag's list of eligible women. Maria is utterly flummoxed when Howard asks her to the opera one night, and having to keep decorum and not let her irritation show, or, perish the thought, reject Howard Stark and therefore be known as the woman who rejected Howard Stark, Maria attends the opera, and while she expects Howard to attempt to subtly paw at her in the way of her previous dates, he does not, and remains respectful, though jovial and amusing, much to Maria's confusion.

--canon point.

She is formidable with a martini glass and her backhands have left hand marks that've stung for days, even after application. She's not that good with confrontational physical fights, so while long range object tossing is a go, fist fighting is a definite no-no.

She likes to wear these lovely white gloves and high-heeled pumps and bows! She admires a lovely pearl bauble and finds antiques delightful. But don't mistake her tendency towards luxury as being "snobby". Maria is anything but "snobby". She's a confident, capable woman, thank you.
